The DeWitt County Museum
While the first part of our name, the C. H. Moore Homestead, is most often associated with the Mansion House owned by Clifton Moore, the second half of our name is equally important: that is, the DeWitt County Museum.
This museum is not really contained in one enclosed space, rather surprising the visitor with items of historical interest in all corners of the Homestead: vintage farm machinery and tools in one building, for example, and a collection and carriages, buggies, and sleighs used over a century ago in another.
But if there is a center to the DeWitt County Museum it can be found on the lower level of the Mansion House, where the history of the area can be experienced in the permanent and revolving collections and exhibits located there. These exhibits contain relics, writings, and images that tell the unique and inspiring stories of the people, places, and events of historical DeWitt County and Clinton.
And, as such, it is the story of small town and rural Middle America over the last 200 years.
